In August 2016, the European Southern Observatory announced the discovery of Proxima b. Proxima b is an Earth-sized planet orbiting its star in the habitable zone. It orbits its star at a distance of about 0.05 astronomical units (7,000,000 km, 5,000,000 mi). Proxima Centauri b is estimated to have a temperature that would allow liquid water to exist on its surface.
